Where to go cycling:
The Christchurch City Council Cycle Map shows all the separated cycle
paths, such as the Railway Cycleway, Hagley Park, and Riccarton Bush and the
on-road marked cycle lanes. There are also many other wide roads throughout
Christchurch that are ideal for cycling. Most regular cyclists have worked
out the best route to their destination and it is often worth trying a few
routes, as the shortest route may not always be the quickest or most
pleasant.
You might consider cycling on roads with slower speeds and less traffic. A
route through local suburbs and parks makes for a more enjoyable ride than
one on a major arterial road. In all, there are more than 110km of cycle
facilities in Christchurch.
For recreational cycling there are mountain bike tracks in Bottle Lake
Forest, on the Port Hills and at various other parks.
Where to park when you get places:
Parking your cycle is easy. Cycle stands are spread throughout Christchurch
at popular destinations. If stands aren't available, you can often find a
fence or lamppost to park your bike against. Consideration of other people
when parking your bike is important, don't block pathways or doorways.
Always lock your bike, even if you are leaving it for only a short time.
Many buildings have their own cycle parks or sheds, so ask if there is one.
The Exchange, for example, has "cages" for you to lock your cycle up when
transferring to a bus. Some workplaces provide showering facilities and
lockers for your convenience. Ask at the places you go to regularly to see
if they have these facilities. |
